Bridge – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

A Bridge is a removable metal or insulated platform that sits inside a rebuildable atomiser (RDA, RTA or RDTA) and electrically joins the positive and negative posts. Often called a “post bridge” or “positive bridge,” it allows vapers to install a Coil“>single coil so that current flows evenly through both legs, effectively turning a Deck“>two-post deck into a single-post configuration. By creating a low-resistance path between terminals, the bridge simplifies coil placement, stabilises resistance readings and helps beginners achieve consistent ramp-up without needing to master dual-coil builds. It is especially popular on squonk-compatible RDAs where space is limited.

Technical Details

Bridges are usually machined from 304-grade stainless steel, brass or copper, then gold- or silver-plated to reduce voltage drop. Typical dimensions range from 4 mm to 8 mm in length, 2 mm in width and 0.5 mm thickness, with a central 1.2 mm–1.5 mm hole that accepts 2.5 mm–3.5 mm coil legs. Insulation is provided by PEEK or Delrin washers rated for temperatures above 250 °C. Two main styles exist: the “solid bar” bridge (one-piece) and the “spring clamp” bridge (two-piece with tension arms). Resistance contribution is negligible—usually below 0.005 Ω—so it will not alter the final build reading on a regulated Mod“>box mod. Some manufacturers include reversible bridges that can be flipped to accommodate either bottom-coil or vertical-coil orientations, aligning with Vertical Coil)”>BVC (Bottom Vertical Coil) wicking methods.

Usage & Tips

When installing, first tighten the bridge securely to the positive post, then insert your coil legs into the provided slots and tighten side screws until snug—over-torquing can strip micro-threads. Centre the coil 1 mm–2 mm above the build deck airflow for best flavour and to avoid shorts against the bridge itself. If you notice hot-spots, gently pulse at 15 W–20 W and strum the coil; the bridge distributes heat evenly, so hotspots are rare. Always check resistance on a regulated mod before firing; a sudden drop can indicate the bridge is touching the deck or barrel. Finally, wipe the bridge weekly to remove sweetener residue and maintain low voltage drop.

History/Context

Bridges first appeared in 2014 when Australian modders sought an easy way to run single coils on two-post RDAs without sacrificing squonk functionality. As the market shifted toward flavour-focused, lower-wattage vaping, the bridge became a standard accessory shipped with many rebuildable atomisers, bridging the gap between cloud-chasing decks and everyday usability.
