Closed System – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

A Closed System is a type of vaping device where the e-liquid is sealed inside pre-filled cartridges or pods that cannot be refilled by the user. The purpose of a closed system is to offer a no-fuss, mess-free alternative to open tank kits; once the pod is empty you simply click in a new one. Because the coil, wick and liquid are all factory-sealed, there is no need to handle cotton, prime coils or worry about spills—making it ideal for beginners, commuters, or anyone who values convenience over customisation. Closed systems are usually draw-activated, ultra-portable and optimised for higher-strength nicotine salts rather than cloud chasing.

Technical Details

Inside each sealed pod, a low-resistance coil (typically 0.8–1.6 Ω) is paired with a precisely measured wick of either organic cotton or silica. The pod snaps onto a small battery (250–500 mAh) via magnetic pins that deliver 3.2–4.2 V depending on charge level. Airflow is fixed, creating a tight mouth-to-lung draw that mimics a cigarette. Pods hold 1.0–2.0 mL of e-liquid under TPD/Australian standards and contain 20–60 mg/mL nicotine-salt formulations for fast absorption. Variations include “hybrid” kits with rechargeable pens and disposable pods, and “eco” versions that allow battery recycling while keeping the liquid compartment sealed.

Usage & Tips

  • Store pods mouth-up to keep the wick saturated and avoid dry hits.
  • If vapour drops, tap the pod gently to release air bubbles around the coil.
  • Keep spare pods sealed until use; exposure to heat or sunlight can darken nicotine salts.
  • Never try to open or refill a closed pod—rupturing the seal can leak liquid onto the battery contacts and create a safety risk.
  • Dispose of spent pods at local e-waste centres; lithium batteries and residual nicotine require special handling.

History & Context

Closed systems surged in 2015 when JUUL paired nic-salt chemistry with 1.5 Ω pods, delivering cigarette-like satisfaction without cloud chasing. Australian nicotine import laws have since made closed systems popular: travellers can legally bring limited pre-filled pods, whereas open bottles face stricter regulation. Today, every major manufacturer offers a closed-line alternative, cementing the format as the gateway device for adult smokers Down Under.
