Inhale Style – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
Inhale Style refers to the two distinct ways a vaper draws vapour into their lungs—Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) and Direct-Lung (DL)—each mimicking a different smoking or shisha experience. Choosing the correct inhale style determines Hit“>throat hit, cloud size, nicotine strength and even which device you buy. Beginners usually start with MTL because it feels like a cigarette, while cloud-chasers prefer DL for bigger vapour production.
Technical Details
MTL coils range 1.0–2.5 Ω, operate at 8–18 W and use high-resistance Kanthal or Wire“>Nichrome wire. Tight 1.2–1.8 mm airflow channels create a restricted draw that lets vapour linger in the mouth before a second inhale to the lungs. DL coils are sub-ohm (0.15–0.5 Ω), need 30–100 W and wider 3–8 mm airflow slots so vapour shoots straight to the lungs in one continuous breath. Modern devices such as the IGET Bar”>IGET Bar or pod kits with Battery“>integrated battery systems often auto-detect CoilResistance“>coil resistance and suggest the ideal wattage, but you still select the physical drip-tip bore and airflow ring position to match your chosen inhale style. Battery type matters too: high-drain ICR battery cells or safer IMR/INR chemistry packs must supply enough continuous amps for DL without overheating the insulator gaskets.
Usage & Tips
- MTL: Use 12–20 mg freebase or 20–35 mg nic salts, 50/50 PG/VG. Prime coil with 5–7 drops, start at lowest wattage and close airflow 50% to avoid spit-back.
- DL: Stick to 0–6 mg freebase, 70–80 VG. Open airflow fully, inhale firmly for 3–4 s and keep cotton saturated—chain-vape slowly to prevent dry hits.
- Safety: If your internal batterymod gets hot during DL, lower wattage 5 W steps and ensure the insulator ring is seated correctly; overheating can shorten ICR battery life or vent the cell.
History & Context
Early cig-a-likes (2008) were purely MTL. When rebuildable atomisers hit the Australian market in 2013, vapers bored out air holes and built 0.5 Ω coils, birthing the DL “cloud-chasing” scene. Today, most starter kits ship with two coils so users can swap between inhale styles without buying separate devices.
