Lead – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

In vaping, a Lead is the thin metal wire that carries electrical current from the Battery“>Lithium Battery to the coil inside your atomiser. It is the “bridge” between the battery’s positive and negative terminals and the resistance wire that turns e-liquid into vapour. Without correctly positioned, undamaged leads, the circuit is broken and the device cannot fire. Leads can be made of nickel, kanthal, stainless steel or nichrome and are trimmed to length after installation.

Technical Details

Leads are typically 22–28 AWG (0.32–0.64 mm diameter) and must remain within the post holes or grub-screw clamps of the Deck“>build deck. Resistance is measured across the full circuit, so every extra millimetre of lead adds ≈0.01–0.02 Ω—enough to push a Low Resistance build outside safe limits. Variations include:

  • Pre-cut leads: factory-supplied coils with measured lengths for pod systems.
  • Rebuildable leads: excess wire left deliberately long for custom coil placement.
  • Spring-loaded leads: found in some RTAs to maintain contact even if the deck shifts.

Ensure no stray strands protrude; they can short against the chamber wall and drain the Lithium Battery rapidly.

Practical Usage

  • Trim leads flush with the post screw heads to minimise Leaking paths around the wick.
  • Bend the positive lead upward on single-coil decks to avoid contact with the metal base.
  • Check the LED Indicator for rapid blinking—often a sign of a shorted lead.

Safety & Troubleshooting

If the mod reads “Check Atomiser,” inspect leads for breaks or oxidation. A darkened or frayed lead can create hot spots, leading to a harsh Hit“>Lung Hit or even thermal runaway. Always power off the device before adjusting leads to protect both the Lithium Battery and the user.

History & Context

When rebuildable atomisers emerged in 2012, builders used thick copper leads salvaged from RC hobby motors. The industry quickly standardised on thinner, higher-resistance alloys to suit regulated mods. Today, lead design balances conductivity, safety and flavour purity, reflecting the evolution from mech-mod cloud chasing to precise temperature-controlled vaping.
