Muji Cotton – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
Muji Cotton is an unbleached, untreated organic Japanese cotton widely used by Australian vapers as a wicking material in Coil“>mesh coil and rebuildable atomisers. Its purpose is to absorb and deliver e-liquid to the heating element, producing clean flavour without the chemical aftertaste sometimes found in silica or factory-made wicks. Because it is pesticide-free and heat-resistant, Muji Cotton is ideal for both MTL (Mouth to Lung) and direct-lung builds, giving beginners and advanced users a cheap, safe alternative to pre-made coils.
Technical Details
Muji Cotton is harvested from the Gossypium herbaceum plant and processed without chlorine or hydrogen peroxide, leaving the natural cellulose fibres intact. Typical pads measure 6 cm × 8 cm and weigh 100 g m², yielding 60–80 wicks per sheet. Each fibre has a hollow lumen that increases absorbency rate to 25 mL min, allowing rapid saturation even with high-VG juices. Variants include “Puff” (fluffy, best for Mod“>mechanical modcloud chasing) and “Organic” (denser, perfect for MTL). Unlike bleached cotton, Muji retains a light beige tint and carries no residual dioxins.
Usage & Tips
- Preparation: Cut strip 1 cm wider than coil ID, peel outer layers, then roll gently to avoid hotspots.
- Wicking: Prime with a few drops of e-liquid before firing; aim for slight resistance when pulling through coil.
- Common Issues: Dry hits? Thin your tails; leaking? Increase cotton density inside juice ports.
- Safety: Boil in distilled water for sterile vaping on mechanical mod setups; replace every 3–5 days to prevent carbon build-up.
History & Context
Originally sold in Japanese lifestyle stores, Muji Cotton entered the vaping scene around 2013 when rebuildable atomisers gained popularity. Its affordability and neutral flavour quickly displaced silica rope, becoming the go-to wick for cloud competitors in Australia and worldwide.
