Matte Finish – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
Matte Finish is a non-reflective, low-gloss surface treatment applied to mods, tanks, and other vaping hardware. Instead of the mirror-like shine of polished metal or glass, a matte coating diffuses light, giving devices a smooth, satin-like appearance that feels almost soft to the touch. Its primary purpose is aesthetic—delivering a modern, understated look that resists fingerprints and minor scratches—while also improving grip so your Mod“>mechanical mod or pod system is less likely to slip from your hand during daily use.
Technical Details
Matte finishes are created by bead-blasting or micro-texturing the metal chassis (aluminium, zinc alloy, or stainless steel) with 120–220 grit media, then sealing with anodising, PVD (physical vapour deposition), or a ceramic nano-coating 5–15 µm thick. The result is a surface roughness (Ra) between 0.4–1.2 µm—enough to scatter light and reduce glare without compromising machining tolerances. Variants include:
- Soft-touch matte: silicone-polymer layer for extra grip, common on 80–100 W regulated mods.
- Sand-blasted matte: raw aluminium blasted with glass beads, popular in MTL tube mods.
- Matte DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon): ultra-thin 2 µm coating that adds scratch resistance up to 9H pencil hardness.
Usage & Tips
- Cleaning: Wipe with a microfibre cloth dampened in 70 % isopropyl alcohol; avoid abrasive pads that can polish the texture into glossy spots.
- Storage: Keep away from keys or coins in pockets—matte coatings are tough but can chip at edges if knocked against hard surfaces.
- Heat dissipation: Matte black surfaces radiate heat 5–10 % more efficiently than glossy paint, helping high-mAh dual-battery mods stay cooler.
- Pairing: Matte tanks pair well with Coil“>mesh coil atomisers—both emphasise modern styling and minimise distracting reflections.
History & Context
Matte finishes entered the vaping mainstream around 2016 when high-wattage box mods sought to distance themselves from flashy, chrome-laden devices. Influenced by premium tech brands, manufacturers adopted PVD coatings first used in luxury watches, giving vapers a sophisticated alternative that still feels at home in Australia’s laid-back, outdoors lifestyle.
