One-Coil Mode – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
One-Coil Mode is a selectable power setting on modern Open System box mods that tells the chipset to deliver energy as if only a single Ohmcoil is present, even when the tank or rebuildable deck actually holds two or more coils. By engaging this mode the device halves the total recommended wattage, prevents ramp-up delays, extends battery life and keeps the Organic Cottonwick from drying out—perfect for new vapers who want cooler, quieter vapour without re-building a whole single-coil deck.
Technical Details
Internally the mod samples resistance through the 510 pin every few milliseconds. In One-Coil Mode the micro-controller ignores the second (or third) leg of a parallel build and calculates output using the formula P = V² ÷ Rsingle. Typical firmware caps current at ⅔ of the board’s maximum—so a 200 W mod will rarely exceed 130 W—and automatically lowers cut-off voltage by 0.2 V to reduce battery strain. Most Australian devices show “1C” or “Single” on the OLED Screen and lock resistance within ±0.05 Ω. Variations include “Single Coil Curve” (temperature-control Ti/Ni200) and “BYPASS-1” (direct battery voltage with double-cell sag compensation).
Usage & Tips
- Start at the manufacturer’s suggested single-coil wattage even if your dual build is rated higher; dry hits disappear and you save up to 30 % battery per session.
- If vapour feels weak, raise power in 2 W steps instead of jumping straight to dual-coil levels—this keeps Overheating Protection from throttling the board.
- Check that each coil leg is identical length; unequal resistance can trick the mod into thinking one coil is missing, causing fluctuating read-outs.
- Rotate your batteries between charges when using One-Coil Mode on dual-bay mods: because current draw is lower, the first cell cycles less and lasts longer.
History & Context
One-Coil Mode first appeared in 2017 on the Vaporesso Revenger kit to satisfy European TPD 2 mL tank users who still wanted big-flavour builds. Australian firmware teams quickly adopted the feature for our high-nic import market, making dual-coil RDAs economical for 2020 nicotine-salt vapers. Today nearly every chipset—from DIY-friendly YiHi to ultra-compact Quest—offers the mode as standard, reinforcing its place in the local vape scene.
