Power Bank Function – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
Power Bank Function is a built-in feature on some advanced vape devices that lets the mod share its battery charge with other USB-powered electronics—typically a phone, tablet, or even another vape—turning your electronic cigarette into a portable power bank. Instead of carrying a separate battery pack, vapers can simply plug a standard USB-C or micro-USB cable into the mod’s OUT port to top-up external gear while still having enough energy left for vaping. It’s especially handy on camping trips, festivals, or long commutes where wall sockets are scarce.
Technical Details
Internally, the mod’s chipset detects when the USB data pins are configured for “host” mode and reroutes direct-current (DC) from the internal cells through a boost converter that steps the voltage up to the standard 5 V USB output. Most devices offer 5 V 1 A (5 W) or 5 V 2 A (10 W), although a few flagship kits reach 5 V 3 A (15 W) Quick-Charge compatibility. Dual-18650 or 21700 mods provide 6 000–8 000 mAh total capacity—roughly two full phone charges—while single-cell pod systems with the function manage 1 000–1 200 mAh, enough for an emergency call boost. Some boards add passthrough: you can vape while the external device charges, but total puff count and charge speed drop slightly because the cells share load current. Safety circuitry prevents over-discharge below 3.2 V, over-temperature (>70 °C), and short-circuits, automatically cutting power to protect both the mod and the gadget being charged.
Usage & Tips
- Check remaining charge first: Only share power if the battery indicator shows ≥30 %; vaping with near-empty cells stresses lithium batteries.
- Use the supplied cable: Cheap leads can drop voltage and confuse the chipset, causing intermittent shut-off.
- Keep airflow slots clear: Boost converters generate extra heat—stand the mod upright and avoid pockets while charging externally.
- Avoid e-liquid spills on the USB port: A single leak of high-VGjuice can insulate the pins and stop the power-bank circuit from recognising a load; swab gently with isopropyl alcohol if sticky.
- Travel smart: Australian aviation rules treat mods with lithium cells as spare batteries—you may be asked to demonstrate the device powers on, so ensure at least a partial charge before boarding.
History & Context
The idea surfaced in 2015 when Chinese chipset maker Evolv added “USB host” mode to DNA 200 boards. Early adopters were high-wattage hobbyists, but as pod systems shrank and battery density improved, mainstream brands like VooPoo, GeekVape, and Vaporesso integrated the feature into mid-priced kits from 2019 onward. Today it’s marketed as an everyday utility, reflecting the industry’s push toward multi-function devices that justify carrying a vape instead of a separate power bank.
