Quad Core Coil – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
A Quad Core Coil is a modern vape coil that contains four separate heating wires (cores) running side-by-side inside a single wrap of cotton. Built for cloud-chasing and flavour-boosting, the extra cores create a larger surface area that vapourises more e-liquid with every puff. The result is thicker, warmer vapour and a richer taste compared with single- or dual-core designs. Found in sub-ohm tanks and rebuildable atomisers, quad-core coils usually read between 0.15 Ω and 0.4 Ω and are recommended for 40–110 W vaping. They are ideal for direct-to-lung (DTL) Australian vapers who want high-wattage performance without needing to build their own quad coil from scratch.
Technical Details
Inside a typical quad-core atomiser, four strands of Kanthal, NiChrome or stainless-steel wire are either twisted or machine-flattened, then fused together with Clapton-style outer wraps. Each core is approximately 24–28 GA, giving a combined mass that heats evenly when power is applied. The finished coil measures 3–3.5 mm in internal diameter and is wicked with high-absorption organic cotton or rayon blend. Resistance is normally 0.15 Ω ±0.03 Ω, allowing 60–110 W on regulated mods that support Quick Charge. Because four wires share the current, ramp-up time is faster than a single heavy wire, while surface area rises by roughly 300%, boosting vapour production. Variations include staggered quad-core coils for smoother airflow and quad-core mesh strips that substitute flat metal ribbons for round wire, lowering ramp-up even further.
Usage & Tips
- Prime the coil generously: place five drops of e-liquid on each cotton window and wait five minutes to prevent dry hits.
- Start at the bottom of the recommended Wattage Range”>wattage range, then increase by 5 W until you find the sweet spot—over-driving a quad core can burn cotton within days.
- Use e-liquids no higher than 70 VG to maintain wicking speed; thicker juices may struggle to feed four cores.
- Check Quality Control (QC) o-rings: Aussie batches sometimes arrive with misaligned quad post decks; realign before firing.
- When flavour drops or the coil looks black, soak it in warm water, gentle brush, rinse and dry-burn at 15 W to extend life.
- Always confirm your mod’s 510 connection is clean and that quartz-glass tank sections are crack-free—high heat can stress glass.
History & Context
Quad-core architecture migrated from rebuildable dripping atomisers (RDAs) in 2016 to factory-made coil heads by 2018, as vapers demanded bigger clouds without building quad coils themselves. Chinese manufacturers refined automated Clapton winders, letting sub-ohm tanks adopt the once-exclusive design. Today, quad-core stock coils sit alongside mesh as mainstream high-watt options across Australian vape shops.
