Steep – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

Steep, also known as steeping, is the deliberate ageing process applied to e-liquid to improve its flavour, aroma and overall vaping experience. After mixing, fresh VapeJuice“>vape juice often tastes harsh or “perfumey”. Steeping allows the vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), nicotine and flavour concentrates to homogenise and oxidise slightly, mellowing sharp notes and enhancing depth—similar to letting wine breathe or whisky mature in a barrel.

Technical Details

Steeping works through controlled exposure to oxygen, light and heat, accelerating molecular bonding between flavour molecules and solvents. Timeframes vary: fruit flavours may need 3–7 days, custards and tobaccos 2–4 weeks, while complex dessert mixes can benefit from 6–8 weeks. Temperature range is typically 15–25 °C; above 30 °C risks nicotine degradation. Two common methods exist: natural steeping—storing sealed bottles in a dark cupboard with daily shaking (5–10 seconds)—and speed steeping using ultrasonic cleaners or warm water baths (50 °C for 30 min cycles). When using a Mod“>Squonk Mod or Sub-Ohm atomiser, well-steeped juice wicks better and reduces coilgunk.

Usage & Tips

  • Shake daily to distribute settled flavourings and prevent separation.
  • Label bottles with mix date and intended steep length to avoid premature vaping.
  • Store upright in tinted glass or PET bottles, away from direct light and heat sources.
  • Avoid over-steeping; beyond 8–10 weeks nicotine oxidises, darkening the liquid and adding peppery taste.
  • Safety note: Always check for Short Circuit Protection on your Kit“>Starter Kit before testing freshly steeped juice at high wattages.

History & Context

Steeping gained prominence around 2013–2014 when DIY mixing exploded in Australia and the US. Early forums like AussieVapers popularised “breathing” (uncapping for 12 h) and “streathing” (shake, warm, cool cycles). Today, commercial vendors pre-steep lines to cater to impatient vapers, while hobbyists still swear by patient ageing for premium flavour.
