Definition

Threading is the precisely cut screw-like pattern found on the metal connection points of vape devices—typically where a tank or atomiser meets a mod or battery. These grooves allow components to be twisted together securely, completing the electrical circuit that powers the coil. Good threading ensures consistent power delivery, reliable Temperature Control (TC) readings and prevents leaks by keeping the tank firmly sealed. In short, it’s the “glue” that holds your vape rig together while letting you swap parts quickly.

Technical Details

How It Works

Threading acts as both mechanical fastener and electrical conductor. When a 510-threaded tank is screwed onto a matching 510 mod, the male pin (centre post) touches the female pin, creating a low-resistance path for current while the outer threads ground the device. Standard 510 threading uses a 7 mm × 0.5 mm metric pitch; the “510” label refers to 10 threads at 0.5 mm each. Variations include eGo (wider, 12 mm × 0.5 mm) and proprietary pods that snap in magnetically, but 510 remains the universal standard. Some high-end mods add spring-loaded or floating 510 pins to accommodate slight height differences, ensuring perfect contact with any Wire“>Titanium Wire coil.

Common Types

  • 510: Universal, 7 mm diameter, found on most modern tanks, RDAs and mods.
  • eGo: 12 mm diameter, still used on older pen-style batteries and some Top Fill clearomisers.
  • Hybrid 510: Direct battery contact for maximum conductivity; only for advanced users.

Usage & Tips

  • Keep it clean: Wipe threads weekly with isopropyl alcohol to remove e-liquid residue and grit that can cause misfires or a weak Hit“>Throat Hit.
  • Don’t overtighten: Finger-tight plus a quarter-turn is enough; over-torquing can strip the threads or push the 510 pin too deep, breaking the circuit.
  • Check for cross-threading: If the tank wobbles or catches, back it out and realign—forcing it will damage both components.
  • Safety: Before using a hybrid mech mod, verify the tank’s 510 pin protrudes at least 1 mm past the threads to prevent hard shorts.

History & Context

Threading evolved from cigarette-sized “808” connections in early cig-a-likes to the 510 standard introduced by Joyetech in 2010. Its adoption unified a fragmented market, allowing Australian vapers to mix and match tanks and mods with confidence. Today, even pod systems that rely on magnets still retain 510 threading on adapter bases to maintain backward compatibility.
