Build Deck – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
A build deck is the metal platform inside a rebuildable atomiser (RDA, RTA or RDTA) where the user installs their own coil and wick. Think of it as the engine bay of your vape: it houses the positive and negative posts (or post-less clamps) that secure the coil, plus the juice wells that feed cotton with e-liquid. By allowing vapers to wrap, mount and tweak their own coils, the build deck turns a standard Mod“>box mod into a fully customisable device capable of producing bigger clouds, richer flavour and longer battery life than pre-made coil heads.
Technical Details
Build decks are machined from stainless steel, gold-plated brass or sometimes aluminium. They range from tiny 16 mm “nano” decks to 30 mm+ post-less designs. Most decks use either:
- Post-style: two or three posts with holes or screws to trap wire ends; common on older RDAs.
- Post-less: a flat deck with clamp-style terminals; allows bigger coils and easier trimming.
- Velocity-style: two angled posts with two holes each—still the most beginner-friendly layout.
Postdiameter is typically 2.5–3.5 mm to accept standard coil leads. Juice well depth varies from 4 mm (squonk-friendly) to 8 mm (chain-vape tanks). Insulators are PEEK or Ultem, rated for 260 °C. Resistance range is only limited by the attached battery and box mod; most decks comfortably handle 0.08 Ω–3.0 Ω builds. Airflow is slotted under or beside the coil, with AFC rings letting users switch between mouth-to-lung and direct-lung draws.
Usage & Tips
Before mounting a coil, dry-fire at 15–20 W to check for hot-spots; strum or pinch until the glow is even. Centre the coil 1–2 mm from the air-hole to avoid spit-back and maximise flavour. Use just enough cotton to snugly move inside the coil—too tight chokes wicking, too loose causes leaks. When using sweet Aussie juices, rinse the deck every second day to prevent caramelised gunk on the bottom coil surface. Always lock your box mod or remove the battery when re-wicking; a stray screwdriver can complete the circuit and vent cells. If your build reads “short” or resistance jumps, check for clipped wire ends touching the deck wall.
History & Context
Early 2010s genesis tanks featured tiny steel cables instead of decks. The 2013 “Golden Greek” RTA introduced screw posts, but it was the 2014 Velocity RDA that popularised the two-post, four-hole deck still copied today. As Australian vapers embraced cloud-chasing, local manufacturers like Vaperizzo and Vicious Ant refined post-less clamps and squonk pins, pushing the build deck from hobbyist curiosity to mainstream must-have.
