Refillable – What is it in Vaping?

Refillable – Glossary Entry

Definition

A refillable device or component in vaping is any tank, pod, cartridge, or atomiser designed to be manually replenished with e-liquid once it is empty, rather than being disposed of after a single use. Its main purpose is to give vapers control over flavour, nicotine strength, and ongoing cost savings while reducing environmental waste. Refillable hardware is found across the spectrum—from simple pod kits for beginners to advanced RTA, RDA, and RDTA systems—allowing users to keep the same device and simply top up with fresh juice.

Technical Details

Refillable systems rely on a sealed reservoir connected to a wicking material that feeds e-liquid to the coil. Most pods and tanks use a silicone or rubber fill-port with a maximum capacity between 2 mL (TGO-110 compliant) and 8 mL in rebuildables. Pressure-equalisation channels prevent vacuum lock, while o-rings ensure leak resistance. Variants include:

  • Top-fill (slide, twist, or threaded caps)
  • Bottom-fill (rubber plug on base)
  • Side-fill (common in pods)
  • Rebuildables (RTA/RDA/RDTA) where users install their own coils and wicks, allowing precise resistance tuning and larger juice wells

Materials range from PCTG plastic in entry-level pods to borosilicate glass and stainless steel in high-end atomisers.

Usage & Tips

To refill safely, power off your Mod“>regulated mod, locate the fill-port, and tilt the tank slightly to avoid air pockets. Leave a small air gap to prevent gurgling. If leaking occurs, check o-ring integrity and ensure coil resistance matches wattage output. Clean threads and ports weekly with warm water or isopropyl alcohol; dry thoroughly before re-assembly. Always use e-liquids within the viscosity range recommended for your coil (typically 50/50 to 70/30 VG/PG). When switching flavours, rinse or replace the coil to avoid ghosting.

History & Context

Refillable hardware emerged in 2010 alongside second-generation clearomisers, moving vaping away from prefilled cartomisers. Australia’s prescription model since 2021 has further driven demand for refillable systems, as users import nicotine e-liquid separately and need compliant, reusable devices.
