Squonk Mod – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
A Squonk Mod is a special type of vape device that houses a built-in squeezable e-liquid bottle, allowing users to feed juice directly into the atomiser from below. By gently pressing the soft bottle through a cut-out in the mod’s body, vapers can saturate the wicks on-demand without removing the top cap or carrying separate bottles. This “bottom-feed” system delivers the dense flavour of a dripper (RDA) with the convenience of a tank, making squonking popular among flavour-chasers who want maximum taste without constant dripping. Beginners often graduate to a squonk mod after mastering a basic starter kit and learning sub-ohm principles.
Technical Details
Inside every squonk mod is a food-grade silicone bottle (usually 7 ml, 10 ml or 12 ml capacity) connected to the 510 connector by a hollow, gold-plated positive pin. When the bottle is squeezed, e-liquid travels up the pin and into the juice well of a compatible bottom-feed (BF) RDA. Squonk mods come in regulated and mechanical forms: regulated versions offer variable wattage, temperature control and short-circuit protection, while mechanical squonkers rely purely on battery voltage and user knowledge. Most modern squonkers accept a single 18650 or 21700 battery, keeping the footprint compact; dual-battery squonks exist but are bulkier. The 510 BF pin must protrude at least 4 mm to ensure leak-free contact, and bottles are sold in different firmness levels (soft, medium, firm) to suit hand strength.
Usage & Tips
- Prime a new build by squeezing until a tiny pool of liquid appears on the deck, then release to re-seal the bottle and avoid flooding.
- Use single-coil RDAs for better battery life and faster ramp-up; dual-coil setups drain bottles quickly.
- Check the bottle for cracks every re-fill—silicone degrades with acidic or citrus flavours. Carry a spare bottle in case of leaks.
- Never over-squeeze on a fresh battery; excess pressure can force liquid into the mod’s electronics and void warranty.
- Clean the 510 threads weekly to prevent sugary build-up that can insulate the BF pin and cause auto-firing.
History & Context
The first commercial squonk mod, the “Juicebox” by the Vape Shop NJ, appeared in 2010 as a DIY 3D-printed box. Popularity exploded after the 2015 release of the Kangertech Dripbox, bringing affordable bottom-feed vaping to Australia. Today, squonk mods sit between mainstream pod systems and high-end mechanical drippers, with manufacturers like Vandy Vape and Dovpo releasing regulated chipsets that rival any flagship box mod.
