ICR Battery – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

An ICR Battery (Lithium-Ion Cobalt Rechargeable) is a cylindrical power cell used in many IGET and other open-system vape devices. Built on a lithium-cobalt-oxide chemistry, an ICR battery stores and delivers the energy required to heat your coil and produce vapour. Unlike an integrated battery sealed inside a disposable or pod kit, an ICR cell is removable, letting advanced vapers swap cells on the go, extend device life, and tailor performance to their inhale style.

Technical Details

ICR cells rely on cobalt-based cathodes that offer high energy density—typically 3.6–3.7 V nominal and capacities between 650 mAh (18350) and 3000 mAh (18650). They discharge with a flat voltage curve until near-empty, giving consistent wattage until the final moments. Most vaping-rated ICR batteries are 18650 (18 mm diameter, 65 mm length) or 21700 sizes, supporting continuous discharge rates of 10–20 A. Compared to IMR (manganese) or INR (nickel) chemistries, ICR’s higher Resistance“>internal resistance makes them better suited for moderate-wattage mouth-to-lung setups than aggressive direct-lung builds. Always check the wrap for model, amp limit, and insulator ring integrity.

Usage & Tips

  • Match Ratings: Ensure the cell’s continuous discharge rating (CDR) exceeds your mod’s maximum draw.
  • Storage: Keep cells at 40–60 % charge in a cool, dry case; never loose in pockets with keys.
  • Charging: Use a dedicated external charger designed for lithium-ion cells; avoid USB charging on single-cell mechs.
  • Inspection: Look for torn wraps, dents, or a missing insulator disc—replace or re-wrap immediately.
  • Rotation: Label and cycle multiple ICR batteries to prevent deep discharge that shortens lifespan.

History & Context

ICR technology migrated from early digital cameras to vaping around 2010, when rebuildable atomisers demanded more power than internal battery cig-a-likes could supply. The rise of IMR and INR chemistries has since shifted high-wattage users away from pure cobalt cells, yet ICR remains popular in mid-range devices for its energy density and wide availability across Australia.
