Internal Battery – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
An internal battery is a sealed, non-removable power cell that is hard-wired inside a vape device. Unlike removable ICR batteries or integrated battery mods that let users swap cells, an internal battery vape is charged through a USB-C or Micro-USB port and is designed to last the entire lifespan of the kit. Its purpose is to provide a plug-and-play experience—ideal for beginners who want the simplicity of popular disposables like IGET but in a rechargeable, refillable format.
Technical Details
Most internal batteries are high-density lithium-ion packs rated between 300 mAh (ultra-portable pods) and 5,000 mAh (all-in-one box mods). They operate at a nominal 3.7 V and are protected by a small printed circuit board (PCB) that manages inhale styledraw activation, over-charge, short-circuit, and thermal cut-off. In Australia, capacities are usually quoted in milliamp-hours (mAh) and watt-hours (Wh) to comply with airline carry-on limits. Variations include:
- LiPo pouch cells: flat, flexible packs found in slim pod systems.
- 18650-style cylindrical cells: factory-welded into the device for higher-drain kits.
- Pass-through charging: allows vaping while plugged in, provided the insulator and chipset are rated for simultaneous charge/discharge.
Usage & Tips
Charge the device with the cable supplied by the manufacturer; cheap cables can cause voltage sag and shorten battery life. Keep the USB port dry—e-liquid leaks can corrode the insulator around the charging pins. If the mod feels hot while charging, unplug it and let it cool. When performance drops below 70 % of original run-time, recycle the unit at a local e-waste centre; internal battery vapes are not user-serviceable. Never attempt to pry the pack out, as puncturing a lithium cell can cause fire or toxic gas release.
History & Context
Internal batteries first appeared in early cig-a-likes (2008–2010) but gained mainstream traction with the rise of IGET-style closed pods and compact refillable kits. Their seamless form factor now dominates Australia’s starter market thanks to strict battery import rules, offering travellers a hassle-free alternative to removable 18650 mods.
