Definition

A battery sled (also called a battery tray or battery carrier) is the rigid plastic or metal chassis inside a Mod“>box mod that physically holds and isolates the battery or batteries. Its primary purpose is to create a secure, vibration-free seat for the cells while guiding their positive and negative terminals into the correct contact points. By preventing metal-to-metal shorts and aligning cells in series or parallel, the sled ensures reliable power delivery and user safety in both regulated and mechanical vape devices.

Technical Details

Most sleds are moulded from flame-retardant polycarbonate or PEEK, chosen for high-temperature resistance. They incorporate precision-cut channels that match standard cell diameters: 18 mm for 18650, 21 mm for 20700, and 26 mm for 26650 formats. Gold-plated spring tabs or fixed nickel-plated contacts provide low-resistance (< 0.5 mΩ) electrical paths. Dual-battery sleds feature a balance bar or jumper plate to link cells in series (7.4 V nominal) or parallel (4.2 V, doubled capacity). Advanced “slide-and-lock” or magnetic versions allow tool-free removal for external charging, while integrated sleds remain permanently wired to the mod’s Deck“>build deck and control board.

Usage & Tips

  • Insertion: Slide cells in positive-end first until the spring tab clicks; never force polarity.
  • Cleaning: Wipe contacts monthly with isopropyl alcohol to prevent arcing and voltage drop.
  • Common Issues: Loose sleds rattle—add a thin adhesive foam shim. Cracked sleds must be replaced immediately to avoid shorts.
