Ego Thread – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

Ego Thread is the external screw thread found on the top of many eGo stylevape batteries and the matching internal thread on compatible e-cigarette clearomisers, tanks and atomisers. Originally designed for the classic “eGo-T” battery, this 510-compatible connection lets you mix-and-match power sources with mouthpieces, e-liquid reservoirs and coils without tools. For Australian vapers, it remains the simplest way to upgrade from disposable e-shisha pens to refillable, customisable kits while keeping costs low.

Technical Details

Physically, Ego Thread consists of two parts:

  • Outer collar: 12 mm diameter, 0.5 mm-pitch thread that grips the tank’s skirt.
  • Inner 510: Standard 7 mm × 0.5 mm positive pin and negative threading for electrical contact.

This dual-system allows “eGo only” clearomisers (which need the outer collar for stability) and “510 only” atomisers (which rely solely on the inner 510) to work on the same battery. Common variations include:

  • Hybrid eGo/510: Both threads on one device, giving maximum compatibility.
  • Fixed-pin vs. spring-loaded: Older eGo batteries have a fixed centre pin; newer regulated mods use floating pins to protect against short circuits.

Voltage output is typically 3.3 – 4.2 V via direct battery output or regulated constant-voltage circuitry, making it ideal for 1.0 – 2.5 Ω coils used in e-juice tanks.

Usage & Tips

  • Cross-thread check: Screw the tank in gently until the outer skirt sits flush; overtightening can push the centre pin down and break the connection.
  • Cleaning: Wipe both threads with isopropyl alcohol weekly to remove e-liquid residue and prevent “sticky button” issues.
  • Avoid leaks: Ensure the clearomiser’s coil is finger-tight before attaching to the battery; loose coils flood the airflow and seep into the Ego Thread.
  • Compatibility alert: Some modern sub-ohm tanks are 510-only and have wide 22-25 mm bases; these overhang eGo batteries and may stress the outer thread.
  • Safety: Never use a tank with a flush 510 pin on a hybrid mech mod; the Ego Thread skirt can cause a hard short.

History & Context

Joyetech launched the eGo-T in 2010 to give smokers a cigarette-sized device that still held a day’s worth of e-liquid. The dual-thread system became the de-facto “universal mount” for starter kits worldwide. While newer 510-only box mods dominate advanced circles, the humble Ego Thread still equips most Australian vape shops’ entry-level pens and pod adapters, cementing its legacy as vaping’s first truly standardised connection.
