External Battery – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

An external battery is a removable, rechargeable power cell that supplies electricity to your e-cigarette or advanced vaping device. Unlike built-in batteries that are sealed inside a mod, an external battery can be taken out and replaced, allowing vapers to swap in a fresh cell instead of waiting for the device to charge. Its main purpose is to provide reliable, long-lasting power to heat e-liquid into vapour while giving users flexibility and extended vaping sessions.

Technical Details

External batteries most commonly come in the 18650, 20700, or 21700 formats. The numbers refer to dimensions in millimetres (diameter × length); for example, an 18650 cell is 18 mm wide and 65 mm long. Typical specifications:

  • Voltage: 3.6–3.7 V nominal, 4.2 V when fully charged
  • Capacity: 2 000–4 000 mAh (milliamp-hours)
  • Continuous discharge rating (CDR): 15–35 A, crucial for high-wattage vaping
  • Chemistry: Lithium-ion (Li-ion), usually IMR or INR for safety and high output

Some eGo Style pens use smaller 18350 or 18500 cells, while high-end box mods may accept dual or triple 21700 batteries for all-day E-Shisha sessions.

Usage & Tips

Always insert batteries with correct polarity (+ and – match the mod’s markings). Use a dedicated external charger; while most mods offer on-board charging, a quality charger balances cells and prolongs life. Rotate at least two sets so one can charge while the other is in use. Inspect wraps for tears—re-wrap or recycle damaged batteries. Avoid extreme heat and never carry loose cells in pockets with keys or coins, as this can short-circuit the external battery and cause venting.

History & Context

When early E-Cigarette devices relied on low-capacity sealed packs, 2009–2012 saw the vaping community adopt flashlight batteries (18650) for longer life and higher wattage. Today, external batteries power everything from compact single-18650 mods to triple-21700 cloud machines, forming the backbone of the Australian sub-ohm scene.
