Extra Coil – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
An Extra Coil is a spare atomiser coil purchased separately from your E-Cigarette or E-Juicekit. It is the replaceable heating element that turns E-Liquid into vapour. Carrying an Extra Coil ensures you can quickly restore flavour and vapour production when the original coil burns out, avoiding the harsh taste of a “Hit“>dry hit.” Compatible with most eGo Style tanks and modern sub-ohm devices, an Extra Coil is the most frequently replaced part of any vaping setup and is essential for a consistent, satisfying vape.
Technical Details
Inside every Extra Coil is a resistancewire—usually Kanthal, Stainless Steel, or Nickel—wrapped around Cotton“>organic cotton. When powered by your device’s battery, the wire heats to 200 – 300 °C, instantly vaporising the saturated E-Liquid. Resistance values range from 0.15 Ω (sub-ohm) to 1.8 Ω (mouth-to-lung). Australian shops stock common sizes: 0.4 Ω mesh for dense clouds, 0.6 Ω mesh for balanced flavour, and 1.2 Ω round-wire for discreet MTL vaping. Threading follows industry-standard 510 or proprietary press-fit designs, so always match your tank’s model (e.g., Vaporesso GT, SMOK RPM). Extra Coils are sold individually or in 3- or 5-pack blister packs sealed for freshness.
Usage & Tips
Prime a new Extra Coil by dripping 5-7 drops of E-Juice onto the cotton and filling the tank; wait 5 minutes before vaping. Start at the lower end of the coil’s Wattage Range”>wattage range (printed on the side) and increase gradually. Change the coil when flavour drops or you notice leaking. If you experience gurgling, disassemble and rinse the coil under warm water, then dry-burn at 10 W to clear residue. Store spares in their sealed packaging away from sunlight to prevent cotton degradation. Never use a coil below its minimum resistance—Australian devices with bypass mode will auto-regulate, but mechanical mods require careful resistance checking for safety.
History & Context
Extra Coils emerged in the early 2010s when clearomisers replaced disposable cartridges. As E-Shisha culture grew, manufacturers standardised replaceable coil heads, giving Aussie vapers affordable, consistent performance. Today, mesh and temperature-control coils dominate, reflecting Australia’s shift toward high-wattage, flavour-focused vaping.
