Loose Draw – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
A loose draw is an airflow configuration in a vape device that offers minimal restriction when inhaling. Instead of a tight, cigarette-like pull, air moves freely through the tank or pod, creating an open, effortless sensation. The purpose of a loose draw is to facilitate lung hits—deep, direct-to-lung inhales favoured by sub-ohm vapers chasing dense vapour and intense flavour. Beginners often notice the difference immediately: with a loose draw, you don’t need to “sip” the vapour; you simply breathe it in, much like taking a normal breath. This style pairs naturally with Resistance“>low resistance coils and higher-wattage devices.
Technical Details
Technically, a loose draw is achieved by widening the airflow channels in the tank, pod, or rebuildable atomiser. Most modern tanks feature an external Airflow Control)”>AFC (airflow control) ring that can be rotated to expose larger slots—often 2–4 mm wide—allowing more air to pass over the coil. Internally, the chimneydiameter, coil port size, and drip-tip bore all contribute: a bore of 8–10 mm or wider is common for DL (direct-lung) setups. Some atomisers offer dual or triple cyclops slots, honeycomb patterns, or even interchangeable pins to fine-tune the draw. Compared to a tight Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) draw of 1–1.5 mm, a loose draw reduces negative pressure, enabling higher wattage (40–120 W) without overheating the coil.
Common Variations
- Ultra-Loose: 4 mm+ slots, 12 mm drip-tip, 80–120 W, cloud-chasing.
- Moderate Loose: 2–3 mm slots, 6–8 mm tip, 40–60 W, balanced flavour and cloud.
- Adjustable: Sliding or click-stop AFC rings that let users dial between loose and semi-restricted.
Usage & Tips
To get the best from a loose draw, start with the AFC fully open and take slow, steady breaths—avoid sharp, fast pulls that can cause leaking or gurgling. Pair low-nicotine e-liquids (3–6 mg) to prevent harsh throat hits. If vapour feels too warm, reduce wattage or close the AFC slightly. Watch your LED indicator; rapid flashing may signal low resistance coil issues or an overworked Battery“>lithium battery. Keep airflow slots clean—condensation build-up can narrow the draw and mute flavour. Finally, always prime the coil and check o-rings to prevent the dreaded leak that can accompany wide-open airflow systems.
History & Context
Loose draw vaping emerged in 2013–2014 alongside sub-ohm tanks like the Aspire Atlantis. As coil technology dropped below 1 Ω and high-drain lithium battery mods became mainstream, manufacturers widened airflow paths to cool the coils and satisfy cloud-chasing culture. Today, the loose draw remains the hallmark of DL vaping, distinguishing it from the tighter draws of classic MTL devices and disposable pods.
