Macro Coil – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

A Macro Coil is a large-diameter, low-resistance coil made from Wire“>thick wire that is wrapped with wide spacing between each turn. In vaping, its purpose is to create big clouds of vapour and intense flavour by providing a huge surface area that heats a lot of e-liquid at once. Beginners can picture it as a chunky spring sitting inside your rebuildable atomiser (RDA/RTA); it demands more power than smaller coils, so it is normally paired with high-wattage Mods or Mechanical Mods and is best for direct-lung (DL) vaping rather than MTL (Mouth to Lung) styles.

Technical Details

Macro coils use wire gauges between 20 G and 24 G (0.5–0 ✨ 8 mm diameter) and are wrapped around a 3–4 mm rod, producing 5–12 wraps. Because the wire is thick, resistance usually lands between 0.1 Ω and 0.4 Ω—too low for most pen-style batteries, ideal for 50–150 W regulated devices. The wide spacing lowers ramp-up time and reduces hot spots. Common variations include single, dual, parallel and twisted macro builds. Compared with a Mesh Coil, a macro coil has slower heat transfer but offers easier DIY installation and re-wicking. Always check that your Mod can safely fire the resulting resistance and that battery CDR (continuous discharge rating) exceeds calculated amp draw.

Usage & Tips

  • Mount the coil high enough so airflow hugs the underside, maximising flavour and preventing spit-back.
  • Pulse-fire at 20 W before final wicking to strum out hot spots; glow should be even from inside-out.
  • Use plenty of cotton—thick wicks minimise leaking and tame the high heat—but leave light channels so juice can flow.
  • Common problem: blackened cotton after one day → lower wattage or open airflow; sweet e-liquids caramelise faster on big coils.
  • Safety: stay within your battery’s amp limit; macro draws can exceed 30 A. Married, high-drain 18650/21700 cells with ≥35 A CDR (or 3000 mAh plus) are recommended. Never install on a hybrid-top Mechanical Mod without a protruding 510 pin.

History & Context

Macro coils emerged in 2013–14 when cloud-chasing took off in Australia and the US. Rebuildable atomisers grew larger to fit these beefy builds, pushing manufacturers to develop 100 W-plus regulated mods and high-drain batteries. While sub-ohm tanks and Mesh Coils now offer convenience, the macro coil remains a staple for hobbyists who enjoy handcrafted flavour and vapour production.
