Nodized – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
Nodized is Australian vape slang for e-liquid that has been spiked with extra nicotine salt (nic salt) after manufacture, usually by adding a “nic shot” to a 0 mg short-fill bottle. The term blends “nic” and “customised,” describing the moment a juice is transformed from zero-nic to your desired strength. Because Australia’s prescription-only nicotine laws force vapers to import nic shots separately, most local bottles arrive “un-nodized”; you nodize them at home just before vaping. The process keeps flavours fresher, lets you choose your exact hit, and stays within legal import limits.
Technical Details
Nodizing relies on high-concentration nicotine salt base—typically 100 mg/mL in 100% PG or a 50/50 PG/VG carrier—sold in 10 mL or 30 mL child-proof bottles. A 60 mL short-fill bottle flavoured at 0 mg leaves 10 mL headspace; adding 10 mL of 100 mg/mL nic salt yields a final strength of 14.3 mg/mL (100 ÷ 7). For 50 mg/mL end strength, use 3 mL of 100 mg base plus 7 mL top-up PG/VG. Always shake for 30 s and steep 24 h for homogeneity. Variations include “cold nodize” (straight into the tank) and “slow nodize” (gradual drop-by-drop mixing). Temperature stability is critical: keep nic base below 25 °C and away from UV to avoid oxidation that turns juice pink and peppery.
Usage & Tips
- Measure twice: Use blunt 1 mL syringes or calibrated pipettes; even 0.5 mL error at 100 mg/mL can double your intended strength.
- Shake like a polaroid: After nodizing, invert the bottle ten times, then roll between palms to eliminate hot-spots.
- Label & date: Write new strength and mix date on the cap—nicotine degrades ~5% every three months at room temp.
- Common fail: Juice turns harsh—usually oxidized nic or unmixed pockets; remix and store in glass, not plastic, for long term.
- Safety: Wear nitrile gloves, keep base away from kids/pets, and never eyeball; 100 mg/mL can deliver a dangerous dose via skin.
History & Context
The term “nodized” emerged around 2018 on Aussie Facebook vape groups after the TGA’s 2016 nicotine scheduling forced users to import nic separately. With short-fill bottles dominating shelves, vapers needed shorthand for “just added nic”—nodize was born, echoing “modded” gear culture and distinguishing nic saltcustomisation from factory-made nic salt juice overseas.
