Post – What is it in Vaping?

Post – Definition

In vaping, a post is the threaded metal pin or pillar inside an atomiser deck that acts as the mounting point and electrical contact for coil leads. Found in rebuildable atomisers (RDAs, RTAs, RTDs) and some older clearomisers, posts secure the coil in place while allowing current from the device’s power source to heat the wire. By anchoring the coil and channelling energy, posts enable the conversion of e-liquid—containing Glycol)”>PG (Propylene Glycol) and Glycerin)”>VG (Vegetable Glycerin)—into vapour.

Technical Details

Posts are usually made of stainless steel, brass, or gold-plated copper for low electrical resistance and high conductivity. They feature one or more post holes (typically 2–3 mm in diameter) or clamps to trap coil legs. In dual-post designs, one post is positive and the other negative; a floating post allows easier coil alignment. Variations include:

  • Velocity style: Two posts with two holes each for dual-coil builds
  • Postless deck: No traditional posts; screws sit directly in the deck, saving space
  • Spring-loaded clamp: Holds flat wire or mesh without screws

Post height affects wicking distance to the Juice Well”>juice well, while post thickness influences coil positioning and airflow.

Usage & Tips

For trouble-free use, trim coil legs to equal length before inserting into post holes; this prevents hot spots and uneven heating. Tighten screws firmly but avoid over-torquing, which can strip threads. If you experience a “no-atomiser” error, check that the post screws are secure and the 510 positive pin is protruding far enough. When switching between Power Mode and Temperature Control, ensure coils are mounted centrally so they do not short against the posts. Always isolate the positive post from the deck with the supplied insulator; a damaged insulator can cause auto-firing or battery venting.

History & Context

Posts evolved from the single positive screw of early 2010 cartomisers to multi-post decks that cater to cloud chasing and flavour builds. The shift toward pod systems and disposable vapes with pre-installed coils has reduced the everyday relevance of posts, yet they remain essential in the rebuildable segment favoured by Australian hobbyists seeking lower puff count costs and custom flavour profiles.
