Retrofit in vaping refers to the process of upgrading or modifying an existing device—most commonly an Atomizer“>Dripping Atomizer)”>RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer), Tank Atomizer)”>RTA (Rebuildable Tank Atomizer), or RDTA—to accept parts or features it was not originally designed for. The goal is to extend the life of hardware, improve performance, or add modern conveniences such as top-fill systems, larger juice wells, or squonk compatibility without purchasing an entirely new atomiser. Retrofitting bridges legacy gear with current vaping trends, giving Australian vapers a cost-effective path to innovation.

Technical Details

Retrofits typically involve swapping or machining key components. Common examples include:

  • Deck swaps: Replacing an older post layout with a newer clamp or postless deck while retaining the original chamber and barrel.
  • Cap upgrades: Installing a top-cap with enlarged airflow slots or 810 drip-tip compatibility on a 510-only RDA.
  • Squonk blocks: Adding a BF (bottom-feed) pin and matching hollow positive post to convert a standard RDA into a squonk-ready RDA.
  • Glass & seal kits: Using thicker quartz glass and taller chimney sections to increase RTA capacity from 2 mL to 5 mL while meeting TPD limits.

Precision is critical: thread pitch (usually 510 or 810 standards), resistance measurements (target ±0.02 Ω of original), and internal diameter tolerances (<0.1 mm deviation) must match to prevent shorts or leaks.

Usage & Tips

  • Check compatibility lists: Before purchasing retrofit parts, confirm they are explicitly listed for your atomiser model to avoid thread or seal mismatches.
  • Test resistance after install: Dry-fire coils at low wattage (10–15 W) and verify resistance on a Mod“>regulated mod; sudden drops indicate a shorted retrofit deck.
  • Use authentic spares: Third-party acrylic caps may crack under high heat; opt for PEEK, Ultem, or stainless-steel components for durability.
  • Safety first: When retrofitting to squonk, ensure the BF pin protrudes at least 0.5 mm to maintain solid 510 contact and avoid autofiring.
