Definition

In vaping, a thread refers to the spiral ridges cut into the metal connector where a tank or atomiser screws onto a mod. These threads create a secure electrical and mechanical bond between the two components, allowing power to flow from the battery to the coil so that e-liquid can be vaporised. Think of it as the universal “language” that lets almost any tank talk to almost any mod.

Technical Details

Most Australian vape gear today uses 510 threading: 7 mm diameter with 0.5 mm pitch (distance between peaks). Inside the female connector is a positive pin surrounded by a negative threading sleeve; the male counterpart on the tank has matching ridges. Older or specialty devices may still use eGo (12 mm) or hybrid 510/eGo connectors. Variations include spring-loaded, adjustable, or gold-plated pins for lower resistance and better conductivity. Some high-end mods add reverse-threading or locking rings to prevent accidental unscrewing, while squonk mods integrate a hollow 510 centre pin to feed e-liquid upward.

Usage & Tips

• Cross-threading: Always start by turning the tank counter-clockwise until you feel it “click,” then gently clockwise to seat the threads straight.
• Cleaning: Wipe threads with isopropyl alcohol every few refills to remove e-liquid residue and prevent gunk build-up that can short the temperature control circuit.
• Safety: Never over-tighten; finger-tight plus an extra quarter-turn is enough. Over-torquing can strip the threads or push the positive pin too far, causing auto-firing or a weak Hit“>throat hit.
