Triple Coil – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
A Triple Coil is a vape coil build that contains three individual heating wires running in parallel inside the same atomiser deck. By splitting the electrical load across three strands instead of one, the assembly produces more surface area for e-liquid to contact, generating thicker clouds and richer flavour without needing an extremely high-wattage device. The three coils share the same resistance path, so they heat up together and deliver a warm, dense vapour that many Australian sub-ohm vapers prefer. Whether factory-made in a drop-in Tank head or hand-wrapped for RDAs, a triple-coil configuration balances the line between cloud production and battery efficiency.
Technical Details
Electrically, three identical coils wired in parallel divide the total resistance by three. For example, three 0.9 Ω strands give a combined 0.3 Ω reading on a Mod“>regulated mod. Most pre-built triple-coil heads use 26–28 gauge Kanthal or Stainless Steel, spaced 2–3 mm Diameter“>inner diameter, and operate best between 60 W and 110 W. Some advanced rebuilders twist or Clapton each leg before paralleling, further increasing surface area. Variants include Triple Mesh strips (larger flat surface) and Triple Wire“>Titanium Wire builds for Temperature Control (TC) mode. Because of the higher mass, coil ramp-up time is slower than single coils; many users set a 100–120 W pre-heat for one second then drop to their desired wattage. Always confirm that your batteries (minimum 25 A continuous) and device can safely fire below 0.2 Ω before installing.
Usage & Tips
- Prime each coil thoroughly: soak wicks until saturated, start at 30 W and raise in 5 W steps to avoid dry hits.
- Airflow matters: open the Top Fill tank’s AFC to at least 50 % to keep the assembly cool and prevent “spit-back”.
- Check even heating: pulse at low wattage and strum coils so all three glow simultaneously; uneven legs shorten life and mute flavour.
- Watch e-liquid level: triple coils drink juice quickly; refill when drops below top ports to avoid burnt cotton.
- Safety first: lock resistance when using TC with Titanium or Stainless Steel, and never exceed the continuous amp rating of your battery.
History & Context
The triple-coil concept emerged around 2015 when manufacturers sought middle ground between the popular dual-coil and demanding quad-coil heads. Early Smok TFV4 coils popularised the layout, giving vapers bigger clouds without pushing 150 W. Today, triple coils remain a staple in sub-ohm Tank lines and rebuildable scenes across Australia, valued for their balanced Hit“>Throat Hit and dense vapour production.
