Wide Bore – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
A Wide Bore is any DripTip“>drip tip or mouthpiece whose central airflow channel is significantly wider than the traditional 3–4 mm internal diameter. In Australian vape-speak, “wide-bore” simply means a bigger hole to suck through. The extra space increases airflow, cools the vapour and lets you take deeper, cloudier draws without the tight resistance of cigarette-style mouthpieces. Whether you are chasing big fluffy clouds at high wattage or just want an airier hit, swapping to a wide-bore drip tip is the fastest, tool-free mod you can make.
Technical Details
Most factory drip tips are classed as “510” (8.5 mm outer, 4 mm bore) or “810” (12.5 mm outer). An 810 Wide Bore typically measures 5–8 mm ID, while competition “cloud chuff” tips can exceed 10 mm. Manufactured in Delrin, resin, Ultem or stainless steel, they remain 12–13 mm tall so heat does not reach the lips. Some versions use heat-reducing “double-chimney” geometry: a short 6 mm funnel widening to 8 mm, smoothing turbulence without whistling. Hybrid tips offer interchangeable tops so you can switch between wide-bore and MTL in seconds. Tolerance is tight—an 0.1 mm variance can loosen the o-ring seal—so most quality tips are knurled or fitted with two silicone gaskets to mate securely with tanks such as the Goon, Dead Rabbit or Profile RDA.
Usage & Tips
- Match your inhale style: use a wide-bore with low-resistance, high-wattage coils (0.1–0.3 Ω) for direct-lung draws; keep the original narrow tip if you prefer mouth-to-lung.
- Watch condensation: larger bores collect more vapour; wipe the tip every few tanks to prevent spit-back.
- Keep o-rings lubricated with a tiny drop of e-liquid so the tip pulls off easily for re-wicking or coil work.
- When building, centre your wraps under the bore to avoid hot legs that can scorch Delrin tips.
- Never over-tighten a metal wide-bore on a painted mod; stainless threads can chip the finish.
History / Context
Wide-bore tips emerged in 2013 when competitive cloud-chasers began modifying RDA caps, drilling out 8 mm holes and calling them “chuff enuff” caps. The design quickly commercialised; today almost every Sub-OhmTank“>sub-ohm tank ships with an optional 810 wide-bore tip, cementing it as a mainstream vaping staple rather than a niche accessory.
