80/20 VG PG Ratio – What It Means for Vape Juice & Cloud Production

Definition

The 80/20 VG PG Ratio describes a VapeJuice“>vape juice blend that is 80 % vegetable glycerin (VG) and 20 % propylene glycol (PG) by volume. This high-VG mix is engineered for dense vapour production and a smooth, slightly sweet inhale with minimal Hit“>throat hit. It is the go-to choice for direct-to-lung (DTL) cloud chasers using sub-ohm tanks and rebuildable atomisers. Because it is thicker than 50/50 or 70/30 blends, it works best with modern coils and devices that can wick viscous liquids without dry hits.

Technical Details

How It Works

Vegetable glycerin is a viscous, plant-derived liquid that vaporises at 150–180 °C, producing large, billowy clouds. Propylene glycol, thinner and more volatile, carries flavour molecules efficiently and delivers the familiar “throat hit.” In an 80/20 formulation, VG provides the bulk of the vapour while PG ensures flavour intensity and wicking speed. Typical viscosity at 25 °C is 120–140 cP, so coils should have wicking ports ≥ 6 mm and cotton density tuned for high-flow saturation.

Variations

  • Max VG: 90 %+ VG, even thicker, often 0 mg nicotine.
  • 70/30: Balanced for both flavour and clouds, compatible with many mid-wattage devices.
  • 50/50: Best for mouth-to-lung pods, uses less power and smaller 510 thread coils.

Usage & Tips

Best Practices

  • Use coils rated 0.15–0.4 Ω with 40–90 W output for optimal vapourisation.
  • Prime new cotton generously; high-VG liquids need longer soaking time to avoid dry hits.
  • Store bottles in a cool, dark place; VG is hygroscopic and can darken over time.
  • Pair with 18650, 21700, or 26650 battery mods capable of sustained high-drain output.

Safety & Troubleshooting

Thick 80/20 juice can crack plastic tanks; use glass or PCTG pods. If you experience leaking, check coil seals and reduce airflow slightly. To thin the liquid for older atomisers, add 5–10 % distilled water or a few drops of PG-based 0 mg nicotine shot—never tap water.

History & Context

The 80/20 ratio gained popularity around 2014 when sub-ohm vaping exploded in Australia and worldwide. As high-wattage box mods and rebuildable decks became mainstream, vapers demanded bigger clouds without sacrificing flavour, prompting e-liquid labs to standardise this high-VG mix. Today, it remains the default for “cloud comp” juices and 0 mg shortfills across the ANZ market.
