Battery – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

A battery in vaping is the rechargeable power source that supplies electricity to heat the coil inside your atomiser, turning e-liquid into vapour. Most commonly, it is a high-drain 18650, 20700, or 21700 lithium-ion cell (or an integrated pack) that must deliver continuous current safely while fitting inside your Mod“>Box Mod or pen-style device. The battery’s voltage, capacity (mAh), and continuous discharge rating (CDR) determine how long you can vape and how much power you can feed to Bottom Coil, BVC, or DIY Deck“>Build Deck setups. In short, without a reliable battery, no vapour is produced.

Technical Details

Vape batteries operate on the same lithium-ion chemistry as power-tool cells, but are optimised for high-drain applications. Key specs:

  • Voltage: 4.2 V fully charged, nominal 3.6–3.7 V, cut-off ~3.2 V.
  • Capacity: 2500–3500 mAh for 18650; 3000–4000 mAh for 21700.
  • CDR: 15–35 A; choose a CDR at least 20 % above your coil’s draw (calculated via Ohm’s Law).
  • Internal vs. removable: Pods and AIOs use sealed Li-po packs, while advanced mods accept removable cells for swapping and external charging.
  • Bypass Mode: Some mods can feed the coil raw battery voltage; only high-grade cells with accurate CDR should be used here.

Always marry, rotate, and wrap paired cells in dual-battery mods to maintain balanced load and prolong life.

Usage & Tips

  • Charge on an external charger rated for Li-ion; avoid USB-only charging in dual-battery mods unless the manufacturer specifies balanced on-board charging.
  • Keep wraps and top insulators intact—nicks can cause hard shorts inside the mod’s Build Deck cavity.
  • Store at 60–80 % charge (≈3.7 V) if not used for weeks; never below 2.5 V or above 4.25 V.
  • Notice heat or sudden voltage sag? Retire the cell; Resistance“>internal resistance has risen, risking venting.
  • Transport spare batteries in non-conductive cases; loose cells in pockets with keys are a leading cause of vape-related injuries in Australia.

History & Context

Early e-cigs (2006-2010) relied on 808 or 510 threaded sealed cells. The 2011 shift to user-replaceable 18650s inside Box Mod chassis unlocked high-watt vaping and sub-ohmBottom Coil innovation. Today, 21700 cells and USB-C fast-charging integrated packs dominate, driven by Australia’s nicotine import regulations favouring compact, reliable devices for personal use.
