Dual Battery – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
Dual Battery refers to any VapeMod“>vape mod or device that is powered by two removable lithium-ion cells (usually 18650, 20700 or 21700) connected in series or parallel. The extra cell doubles run-time and raises the maximum safe wattage, making dual-battery mods the go-to choice for Australian vapers who enjoy DTL (Direct to Lung)sub-ohm tanks, rebuildable Dual Coil atomisers or high-wattage vaping above 80 W. Unlike a Disposable Vape, these devices are reusable, rechargeable and designed for users who want longer sessions without carrying spare cells or a power-bank.
Technical Details
Inside a dual-battery mod the cells are wired either series (7.4 V nominal, 4.2 V per cell) or parallel (3.7 V nominal, double capacity). Most mainstream Australian models use series configuration to reach 200 W+ with buck-boost circuitry. Typical specs: 5 V–8.4 V input range, 1 A–3 A balanced on-board charging, 25 A–35 A continuous discharge rating recommended. Battery doors are bottom-hinged, side-sliding or magnetic, and sleds accept 18650 with adapters or larger 21700 cells. Variations include parallel squonk boxes for mech users and triple-21700 mods for ultra-high wattage, but “dual battery” remains the sweet spot for 100 W–230 W devices sold at vape shops across Australia.
Usage & Tips
- Married pairs only: Buy two identical cells, keep them together, charge and discharge as a set to avoid imbalance.
- Rotate position: Swap left/right cell after each recharge to equalise wear.
- Avoid Dry Hitchain vaping above 120 W without adequate wicking; high wattage drains cells fast and can starve cotton.
- External charger preferred: While most mods offer USB-C balancing, a dedicated 2-bay charger extends cell life and is safer overnight.
- Safety: Check wraps for nicks, keep plastic Drip Tip away from battery vent holes, and never exceed the CDR (continuous discharge rating) printed on the cell.
History & Context
Dual-battery mods emerged around 2014 when vapers demanded more than 30 W from single 18650 tubes. Early Australian imports like the IPV3 and Sigelei 150 W set the template; today every major brand—Vaporesso, Voopoo, Geekvape—offers dual-battery kits, cementing them as the workhorse of mid-to-high wattage vaping Down Under.
