Impedance – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

Impedance, measured in ohms (Ω), is the electrical resistance that a coil presents to the current flowing from your vapebattery. In simple terms, it tells the device how much power to send to the coil so e-liquid can be heated into vapour. A lower impedance (sub-ohm) coil draws more current and produces warmer, denser clouds, while a higher-impedance coil uses less power for cooler, discreet vaping. Whether you’re using an IGET disposable or a rebuildable atomiser, understanding impedance helps you match coils to your battery and preferred inhale style.

Technical Details

Impedance is determined by the wire material, gauge, coil diameter, and number of wraps. Typical stock coils for Australian kits range from 0.15 Ω to 1.8 Ω. Regulated mods read this value every time you press the fire button and adjust voltage accordingly (Ohm’s law: V = I × R). Temperature-control devices use the coil’s dynamic impedance—its slight increase as it heats—to regulate temperature. Common variations include:

  • Sub-ohm: < 1.0 Ω, high-wattage DL vaping
  • Above-ohm: ≥ 1.0 Ω, low-wattage MTL vaping
  • Mesh strips: Very low impedance (0.1–0.2 Ω) with even heating

Remember, internal battery or integrated battery mods have amp limits; never exceed them.

Usage & Tips

  • Always check coil impedance on the box or etched on the metal before installation.
  • If your mod displays “Ohms Too Low,” remove the tank, clean the 510 pin, and re-seat the coil to ensure the insulator isn’t damaged.
  • For IGET or other disposables, impedance is preset—just inhale. For refillable kits, start at the Wattage Range”>wattage range printed on the coil and adjust to taste.
  • Safety: Never use a coil below your battery’s continuous discharge rating; this prevents overheating and venting.

History & Context

Impedance became a buzzword in the early 2010s when Australian vapers shifted from 2.0–2.4 Ω cartomisers to sub-ohm clearomisers chasing bigger clouds. Regulated mods soon automated resistance checks, making low-impedance vaping safer and mainstream.
