Single Battery – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

A Single Batteryvape device is any mod or Kit“>starter kit that is powered by one removable or internal battery cell. Its purpose is to supply the electrical energy needed to heat the coil, vaporise e-liquid and deliver flavour and nicotine to the user. Because it relies on just one cell, the mod is lighter, more pocket-friendly and usually cheaper than dual-battery counterparts, making it the preferred entry point for most Australian vapers. Despite the smaller power pack, modern chipsets allow a single 18650, 20700 or 21700 cell to fire sub-ohm tanks up to ~100 W safely.

Technical Details

Single-battery mods regulate output via a DC-DC converter that steps the cell’s nominal 3.6–3.7 V up to the voltage required by the coil. Key specs:

  • Cell formats: 18650 (18 mm × 65 mm), 20700 (20 mm × 70 mm) or 21700 (21 mm × 70 mm)—the larger the cell, the higher the milliampere-hour (mAh) capacity and continuous discharge rating (CDR).
  • Typical Wattage Range”>wattage range: 5–80 W (18650) or 5–100 W (21700).
  • Chipset features: Variable wattage, temperature control, short circuit protection, low-voltage cut-off at ≈3.2 V, and balanced USB-C charging at 1–2 A.
  • Form factors: Tube mods, compact box mods, and squonk mods with an integrated squeeze bottle.

Usage & Safety Tips

  • Match Resistance“>coil resistance to battery CDR: for sub-ohm builds below 0.2 Ω, use a 25 A+ cell.
  • Carry spare cells in a plastic case to avoid pocket short circuits.
  • Charge externally when possible; if using USB, disconnect once full to extend cycle life.
  • Expect 200–400 puffs per charge—carry a power bank for day-long vaping.
  • Rotate cells every 3–6 months and recycle responsibly at local Aussie battery drop-off points.

History & Context

Single-battery devices trace back to 2010’s early tube “mechs.” The 2014 Evolv DNA 40 chip introduced regulated single-cell safety, spurring an explosion of pocket-friendly mods that now dominate the Australian market, from beginner starter kits to high-end squonk boxes.
