Soft Click – What It Means in Vaping Devices

Soft Click

Definition

Soft Click is the quiet, tactile “click” felt or heard when you press the fire button on a vape device that uses a silicone-dome or low-profile membrane switch instead of a traditional metal micro-switch. The purpose of the Soft Click mechanism is to give vapers clear feedback that the circuit has engaged—without the loud, sharp snap of older switches—making it ideal for discreet vaping, early-morning use, or stealth cloud sessions. Found in most modern Kit“>Starter Kit pens, Mod“>Squonk Mod boxes, and many regulated Sub-Ohm devices, a Soft Click improves comfort and reduces finger fatigue during extended vaping.

Technical Details

Under the fire button sits a low-profile silicone dome or TPU membrane (0.2–0.4 mm thick) coated with a conductive carbon pad. When pressed, the dome collapses at roughly 180–220 g of force, closing the circuit between two gold-plated contacts on the PCB. Travel distance is short (0.3–0.6 mm) and total resistance across the switch is <50 mΩ, ensuring minimal voltage drop even in high-wattage Sub-Ohm builds. Variations include:

  • Silent Soft Click: extra silicone layer for near-zero sound.
  • Hybrid Soft Click: combines dome with a micro-lever for longer throw.
  • RGB Soft Click: dome switch integrated under translucent buttons for light feedback.

Most manufacturers rate the dome for 100,000–300,000 actuations; beyond that, the silicone can harden and lose its tactile feel.

Usage & Tips

  • Priming: Press the Soft Click button once before first use to wake the chipset—especially on devices with Short Circuit Protection that auto-sleep.
  • Cleaning: If the button feels mushy, remove the pod/tank and gently swab around the dome with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud; avoid oversaturating.
  • Common Problem: “Stuck fire” caused by juice seepage. Fix by powering off the mod, rinsing the button area with warm water, and letting it air-dry 24 h.
  • Safety: Never force a hard press; excessive pressure can crack the dome and create a permanent short.

History & Context

Soft Click evolved around 2015 when mainstream manufacturers moved away from loud mechanical switches to improve stealth and user comfort. Today, it is standard on 90 % of regulated devices sold in Australia, from pocket-friendly Starter Kits to dual-battery Squonk Mods.
