Super Mesh – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
Super Mesh is a style of sub-ohmcoil that uses a strip of perforated Kanthal or stainless-steel foil instead of traditional round wire. The tiny hexagonal or oval holes punched through the metal create a much larger surface area, letting e-liquid evaporate faster and more evenly. The result is thicker vapour, brighter flavour and a noticeably cooler draw at high wattages. Found pre-installed in many modern tanks and starter kits, Super Mesh coils typically read between 0.12 Ω and 0.2 Ω, making them ideal for direct-lung vapers who enjoy 40–90 W vaping with high-VG juice.
Technical Details
Inside a Super Mesh coil the perforated ribbon is rolled into a short fat cylinder, wrapped with Cotton“>organic cotton and then clamped inside a stainless-steel housing. The large open holes act as continuous wicking channels, so juice reaches every hot spot almost instantly. Most strips measure 8 mm × 3 mm with 1 mm hex-pitch holes, giving an effective surface area roughly 30 % greater than a comparable Clapton build. Resistance is controlled by strip width and alloy: Kanthal A1 versions sit around 0.15 Ω, while SS316L versions come in at 0.12 Ω and can be used in temperature-control mode. Manufacturers such as Geekvape, Vaporesso and SMOK release variations labelled “X1 Mesh”, “Strip Coil” or “Super Mesh PRO”, but all share the same punched-sheet concept and fit a standard 26 mm coil deck.
Usage & Tips
- Prime the coil with 5–7 drops of liquid on each cotton window and let it saturate for at least five minutes before first fire; this prevents dry hits and extends coil life.
- Start at the lower end of the recommended range (e.g., 50 W) and work up in 5 W steps until you find the sweet-spot for your steeped e-liquid.
- Chain-vapers should keep the tank above ¼ full; Super Mesh wicks so quickly that an exposed cotton spot can burn in under a second.
- Rinse the coil under warm water and dry-burn at 15 W to remove caramelised sugar if flavour drops before the coil is actually dead—often you can get an extra 3–4 days’ use.
- Always check for short-circuit protection warnings when screwing the tank onto a new mod; the ultra-low resistance can trip boards set to reject anything below 0.10 Ω.
History & Context
Mesh first appeared in 2015 as a DIY Genesis-sheet wick, but the switch from round wire to perforated strip for sub-ohm tanks was popularised by the 2017 Horizon Falcon and quickly adopted by SMOK’s “Mesh” series. Within a year every major brand offered a “Super Mesh” variant, turning it into the default coil style for mid-wattage cloud chasing in Australia and worldwide.
