TCR Value – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

TCR Value (Temperature Coefficient of Resistance) is a number that tells your VapeMod“>vape mod how much a coil’s electrical resistance rises as it heats up. In Temperature Control (TC)vaping, the chip uses this value to calculate the exact coil temperature in real time, preventing dry hits and burnt cotton. By locking in a target temperature, you enjoy consistent flavour and vapour without the harsh Hit“>throat hit caused by overheating. TCR values are specific to each Wire Type”>wire type—stainless steel, nickel, titanium, etc.—and are usually pre-programmed or entered manually in advanced devices.

Technical Details

Every metal has a unique TCR, expressed in parts per million per degree Celsius (ppm/°C). Common TC wire TCR ranges are:

  • Nickel 200: 0.00600–0.00620
  • Titanium Wire: 0.00350–0.00366
  • SS316L: 0.00088–0.00092

Mods store these values in firmware or allow custom entry. During vaping, the chipset measures resistance every millisecond. When resistance increases by the set TCR multiple of the baseline room-temperature resistance, the mod limits power to maintain the chosen temperature. Slight variations between manufacturers mean Australian vapers should check spec sheets or community databases for the exact TCR of their coil before locking in settings.

Usage & Tips

  • Check your wire type: Using the wrong TCR value will give poor TC performance or “temperature protect” errors.
  • Room-temperature lock: Always let the coil cool to room temp and press “lock resistance” on your mod before vaping; this sets the baseline.
  • Top Fill tanks: After refilling, open the airflow and take a few primer puffs to re-saturate wicks, preventing dry hits even in TC mode.
  • Safety: If flavour suddenly drops or you feel a metallic taste, stop vaping—TCR may be miscalibrated or the coil may be degrading.

History & Context

TCR-based Temperature Control debuted in 2014 with Evolv’s DNA40 board, revolutionising rebuildable tank safety. Early adopters used Titanium Wire and nickel coils; today, most Australian vapers rely on stainless-steel mesh or round wire in both rebuildables and Top Fill stock-coil tanks. Firmware updates now allow fine-tuning TCR values to the third decimal, giving enthusiasts precise control over vapour density and flavour.
