Tesla Coil – What is it in Vaping?

Definition

A Tesla Coil is a style of rebuildable tank atomiser (RTA or RDA) whose Deck“>build deck is shaped like a flattened disc and whose posts rise from the centre like the iconic electrical device invented by Nikola Tesla. Its purpose is to give builders extra room for exotic wire configurations while maintaining a low profile atop a VapeMod“>vape mod. Beginners appreciate the clear post holes that make coil-leading easy, while advanced users exploit the spacious deck to chase denser vapour and crisper Hit“>throat hit.

Technical Details

Construction & Operation

A typical Tesla Coil deck measures 24-26 mm in diameter with a 6 mm Juice Well”>juice well. Two or four posts—sometimes spring-loaded—sit on a raised “T” platform, creating 360° airflow slots that hit the coil from both the side and underneath. This multi-angle air path boosts flavour and cools the coil during high-wattage vaping. Most versions employ dual clamp-style terminals that accept flat or round wire up to 3.5 mm wide, making them ideal for Titanium Wire in Temperature Control (TC) mode. Variants include the Mini Tesla (22 mm) and the triple-post Tesla V3 designed for series builds.

Usage & Tips

  • Wicking: Cut cotton so the tails just skim the base of the well; too long causes flooding, too short leads to dry hits.
  • Coil Placement: Centre the coil 1–2 mm above the airflow slots to balance flavour and cloud production.
  • Common Issues:Leaking often stems from over-dripping or an incorrectly seated Top Fill cap—check the O-rings.
  • Safety: Always pulse the coil at 15 W before final wicking; hot spots can ignite cotton or damage Titanium Wire.

History & Context

First launched by TeslaCigs in 2015, the Tesla Coil bridged the gap between cloud-chasing RDAs and convenient tank systems. Its distinctive aesthetic quickly became a hallmark in the Australian vaping scene, influencing later postless decks and mesh RTAs.
