Ultra Portable – What is it in Vaping?

Ultra Portable – Definition

An Ultra Portablee-cigarette is a palm-sized vaping device engineered for maximum discretion and pocketability. Typically weighing under 80 g and shorter than a credit card, these kits combine a low-wattage battery, non-removable pod or cartomiser, and simplified airflow to deliver a tight, cigarette-like draw. Their primary purpose is to give transitioning smokers and on-the-go vapers a fuss-free nicotine source without the bulk of box mods or external batteries.

Technical Details

Most Ultra Portables operate between 7–25 W and house lithium-ion cells ranging from 300 mAh (ultra-light) to 1 000 mAh (all-day use). They rely on USB Charging—older models via micro-USB, newer ones via USB-C for faster 5 V/2 A top-ups. Internally, they use either:

  • Fixed-coil pods:coil and wick sealed inside the cartridge; replace entire pod.
  • Plug-and-play coils: push-fit 0.6–1.4 Ω mesh or ceramic coils in a reusable pod shell.

Airflow is non-adjustable or limited to a single pinhole, creating a mouth-to-lung (MTL) vape that mirrors combustible cigarettes. Output is regulated by a constant-voltage board or, in the simplest “auto-draw” sticks, an Unregulated Mod-style direct voltage curve that drops as the battery depletes.

Usage & Tips

For best performance, keep the Ultra Portable upright to prevent minor leaking, and take gentler 2–3 second puffs to avoid dry hits. Charge with the supplied cable; high-amp phone chargers can shorten cell life. If auto-draw fails, check for condensation in the air sensor hole and blow gently through the mouthpiece. Because these devices lack removable batteries, never leave them in hot cars or direct sun—internal pouch cells can swell and vent. Finally, use nicotine salt e-liquids (20–50 mg) for satisfying Hit“>throat hit at low wattage; high-VG juices are too thick and will flood the coil.

History & Context

The first wave of Ultra Portables arrived in 2015 with cigalikes and the original JUUL, but Australian vapers saw a boom in 2018–2020 when refillable pod kits like the Caliburn and Vinci series hit shelves. Their rise coincided with tighter airline liquid limits and urban smoking bans, making pocket-friendly vaping the dominant retail segment nationwide.
