Velocity Deck – What is it in Vaping?
Definition
A Velocity Deck is a two-post, dual-terminal rebuildable atomizer deck designed for mounting and heating coils in high-performance vape setups. Each post has two large, horizontal holes secured by flat-head screws, allowing four total coil leads to be clamped in place. Its open layout and generous space make it ideal for both single and dual-coil builds, ensuring even vapor production and intense flavour. Beginners appreciate its forgiving post spacing, while advanced users value the deck’s compatibility with thick, low-resistance wires and exotic coil configurations.
Technical Details
The Velocity Deck measures approximately 18 mm in diameter and stands 6-7 mm tall. Posts are typically 2 mm thick with 2.5 mm terminal holes, accepting up to 3 mm fused Claptonwire without trimming. Airflow is delivered through dual cyclops slots measuring 8 mm × 2 mm, adjustable via a knurled AFC ring. Variants include the original 22 mm Velocity RDA, 24 mm “Velocity-style” decks found in RTAs and RDAs, and post-less derivatives for squonk mods. The deck’s 510 positive pin is gold-plated for conductivity and can be swapped for a squonk pin on most modern versions.
Usage & Tips
- Coil Placement: Centre coils 1-2 mm above airflow slots to prevent spit-back and maximise flavour.
- Wicking: Trim cotton so ends just touch the deck; over-stuffing restricts Juice“>vape juice flow and causes dry hits.
- Problem Solving: If screws strip, replace with grub screws; if posts spin, disassemble and re-seat the positive pin O-ring.
- Safety: Always check resistance on a Mod“>regulated mod before firing; keep builds above 0.1 Ω when using Wattage (VW)”>Variable Wattage (VW) or Variable Voltage (VV) modes.
History & Context
Introduced in 2015 by the American company Avid Lyfe, the Velocity Deck quickly became the blueprint for post-layout design in the rebuildable market. Its open, symmetrical style influenced countless clones and inspired the “Velocity-style” deck category now standard on many Australian RTAs and RDAs.
